Anthony Owan's Endorsement Inconsequential-Simon Utsu
ON CRUTECH’S VICE CHANCELLOR, PROF TONY OWAN-ENOH REJECTING HIS BROTHER AND ENDORSING AYADE
This made the news few hours ago and was greeted by some fanfare. Does it really matter if Professor Anthony, who by the way was made VC due to the influence and lobby of this same brother(Senator John during Imoke’s tenure) he is now openly attacking, endorses him to be governor? What matters much more than anything is the people’s endorsement and most importantly, God’s endorsement!!! Couple of years ago, same scenario played out in Edo State where Governor Obaseki’s kid brother not only did not endorse him but also campaigned vigorously against him. How did it end? Obaseki will be celebrating his second year in office a couple of months from now.
I interacted with Prof Owan-Enoh in September 2017 after an article I did on his poor handling of the welfare of a number of stranded CRUTECH lecturers who were doing their doctoral studies in the UK under the auspices of the Tertiary Education Fund(TETFUND), was published by the leadership newspapers(link shared in comment section). He reached out to me on phone and explained why he abandoned the students. Even though his reasons were not concrete or convincing enough, I let him off the hook- not without advising him to do his best to salvage the situation. I am of the opinion that Prof Anthony who is in the twilight of his tenure as VC, should be more bothered about cementing a legacy as VC- just like his older brother Ransome Owan-Enoh made a name for himself as pioneer chairman of the National electricity regulatory commission(NERC). Fighting his successful kid brother, Senator Owan-Enoh openly at this time, should be the least of his worries and should be at the very bottom of his bucket list.
On the flip side, I think this augurs well for Cross River state- that a frontline gubernatorial aspirant is not being endorsed by a meddlesome family member of his. Cross River is currently undergoing administrative turbulence due to the interference of the incumbent governor’s meddlesome brother- I doubt if Cross Riverians are looking forward to another four years of that.
